Q: What is the Purpose of ODL?

The primary purpose is to provide instant, low-cost liquidity for cross-border payments, solving the 'trapped capital' problem of traditional banking by using XRP as a bridge asset.

Q: How Can I Participate in ODL's Ecosystem?

Institutions can integrate Ripple's payment software, while retail users can participate by holding XRP, using XRP-compatible wallets, or providing liquidity on supported exchanges.

Q: What Sets ODL Apart from Competitors?

Unlike SWIFT or traditional stablecoins, ODL offers near-instant finality (3 seconds) and does not require pre-funded liquidity in every destination country, making it more capital-efficient.

Q: What are the Risks Associated with ODL?

Risks include regulatory changes in different jurisdictions, market volatility of the bridge asset (XRP), and competition from emerging Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

What is ODL?

On-Demand Liquidity (ODL), now often integrated into Ripple Payments, is a financial technology solution developed by Ripple. Its primary mission is to modernize cross-border payments by using the digital asset XRP as a 'bridge currency,' allowing for real-time settlement without the need for traditional, capital-intensive correspondent banking relationships.

How Does ODL Work?

ODL streamlines international transfers through a three-step blockchain process: first, the sender's local fiat currency is converted into XRP at a digital asset exchange; second, the XRP is transmitted across the XRP Ledger (XRPL) in seconds; finally, the XRP is converted back into the destination fiat currency at a local exchange and deposited into the recipient's account.

What Makes ODL Unique?

Unlike the traditional SWIFT system that requires banks to maintain pre-funded 'nostro/vostro' accounts in foreign countries, ODL sources liquidity in real-time. This eliminates the need for billions in idle capital, reduces transaction costs by up to 60%, and enables 24/7/365 settlement that completes in 3-5 seconds rather than days.

Who Are the Founders of ODL?

ODL was developed by Ripple (formerly Ripple Labs). Key figures include Chris Larsen, a venture capitalist and co-founder of E-Loan, and Jed McCaleb, a well-known developer in the crypto space who created Mt. Gox and later co-founded Stellar. The project is currently led by CEO Brad Garlinghouse, who has extensive experience in tech leadership at companies like Yahoo and AOL.
