What is Telefónica?

Telefónica is a global telecommunications leader and one of the largest mobile network providers in the world, operating extensively across Europe and the Americas. Through its digital business unit, Telefónica Tech, the company has established itself as a pioneer in integrating blockchain technology into telecommunications and enterprise services to drive digital transformation and provide secure, transparent infrastructure solutions.

How Does Telefónica Work?

Telefónica utilizes its proprietary managed blockchain platform, TrustOS, to simplify the connection between business processes and decentralized networks. TrustOS acts as a 'middleware' that allows companies to implement blockchain features like traceability, certification, and immutability via simple API calls. The ecosystem often involves partnerships with public networks like Polygon and integration with IoT and AI to create an interconnected data environment.

What Makes Telefónica Unique?

Telefónica stands out by applying blockchain to industrial-scale telecommunications problems, such as the tokenization of over 200,000 tower sites with Atrebo and the creation of a 'self-sovereign identity' (SSI) solution for secure onboarding. Unlike pure-play crypto projects, Telefónica leverages its massive physical infrastructure and millions of customers to offer real-world utilities like the TU Wallet, which integrates crypto payments directly into consumer marketplaces.

Who Are the Founders of Telefónica?

Telefónica was founded in 1924 as Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España (CTNE) in Madrid. Today, its leadership is spearheaded by Executive Chairman and CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete, an economist who has been a driving force behind the company’s digital and technological pivot since 2016. Other key figures include Marc Murtra and the leadership team of Telefónica Tech, which focuses on cybersecurity, cloud, and blockchain innovation.
