As of December 2024, OpenVM has not been audited and is not recommended for production use. The project plans to continue development towards a production-ready release in 2025, which will include comprehensive security audits.

OpenVM: Guía del proyecto | Actualizaciones, Preventa y Airdrop

Q: What is the Purpose of OpenVM?

OpenVM aims to provide a modular and extensible zkVM framework that allows developers to customize and extend the virtual machine without compromising performance or maintainability. It seeks to offer a future-proof and adaptable solution for zero-knowledge applications.

Q: How Can I Participate in OpenVM's Ecosystem?

Developers can participate by contributing to the OpenVM codebase, adding support for different proof systems, proving environments, and frontends. Interested individuals can join the developer community through the official Telegram channel.

Q: What Sets OpenVM Apart from Competitors?

OpenVM's modular no-CPU architecture allows for seamless integration of custom extensions without modifying the core framework. It supports arbitrary ISAs through VM extensions and enables the use of different proof systems, providing flexibility and adaptability for developers.

Q: What are the Risks Associated with OpenVM?

Potential risks include the current lack of security audits, as OpenVM is still under development and not recommended for production use. Developers should exercise caution and stay updated on the project's progress towards a production-ready release.

What is OpenVM?

OpenVM is an open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) framework designed for modularity and extensibility. It enables developers to customize and extend the virtual machine without compromising performance or maintainability. The project aims to provide a future-proof and adaptable zkVM solution by allowing the integration of custom opcodes, circuits, and proof systems within a unified framework.

How Does OpenVM Work?

OpenVM operates on a novel no-CPU architecture, eliminating the need for a central processing unit. This design allows for the seamless integration of custom extensions without modifying the core architecture. Developers can add new instructions and functionalities through VM extensions, which are groups of opcodes interoperating over common memory spaces. The framework supports various proof systems, enabling experimentation and adoption of improvements without rebuilding the entire zkVM stack.

What Makes OpenVM Unique?

OpenVM's modular design allows developers to add custom opcodes, circuits, and proof systems without modifying the core framework. It supports arbitrary instruction set architectures (ISAs) through VM extensions, including RISC-V via RV32IM, proof aggregation, ECDSA, and various cryptographic hashes. The no-CPU architecture enables efficient on-chain verification and the ability to prove unbounded program executions.

Who Are the Founders of OpenVM?

OpenVM was initiated by Axiom, Scroll, and individual collaborators, including Max Gillett. Axiom focuses on advancing zkVM and proof system research, building ZK-enabled products on OpenVM. Scroll is developing OpenVM-enabled rollup applications and plans to use OpenVM in its upcoming zkVM-powered upgrade. Max Gillett has contributed to the development and design of OpenVM.
