Yes, SPHINCS+ has undergone years of public scrutiny and rigorous evaluation by NIST and the global cryptographic community, culminating in its selection as a federal standard (FIPS 205).

SPHINCS: Guía del proyecto | Actualizaciones, Preventa y Airdrop

Q: What is the Purpose of SPHINCS?

The primary goal of SPHINCS is to provide a long-term, secure digital signature scheme that remains resilient even if an attacker uses a powerful quantum computer to attempt to forge signatures.

Q: How Can I Participate in SPHINCS's Ecosystem?

Users can participate by implementing the SPHINCS+ (SLH-DSA) standard in their applications, contributing to open-source cryptographic libraries on GitHub, or exploring the research for SPHINCS-based smart accounts on Ethereum.

Q: What Sets SPHINCS Apart from Competitors?

Unlike lattice-based schemes like Dilithium, SPHINCS is based purely on hash functions, making it a 'conservative' choice with very high confidence in its long-term security properties.

Q: What are the Risks Associated with SPHINCS?

The main technical risks are its relatively large signature sizes and slower verification speeds compared to traditional schemes, though recent research into 'SPHINCS-' is actively mitigating these performance costs.

What is SPHINCS?

SPHINCS is a groundbreaking post-quantum cryptographic project that introduced the first practical stateless hash-based signature scheme. Originally presented at EUROCRYPT 2015, the project evolved into SPHINCS+, which was selected by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) as a global standard for quantum-resistant digital signatures. Its mission is to secure the digital world against the future threat of quantum computers, which are capable of breaking current encryption methods like RSA and ECDSA.

How Does SPHINCS Work?

SPHINCS operates by using a 'tree of trees' architecture known as a hypertree, which combines several cryptographic building blocks: Winternitz One-Time Signatures (WOTS+), Forest of Random Subsets (FORS), and Merkle trees. Unlike earlier hash-based schemes that required users to keep track of how many signatures they had already issued (stateful), SPHINCS is 'stateless.' This means it can be used as a drop-in replacement for traditional signature schemes without the risk of security failure if a backup or virtual machine state is restored.

What Makes SPHINCS Unique?

The primary uniqueness of SPHINCS lies in its 'conservative' security approach; its safety depends solely on the security of the underlying hash functions (like SHA-256 or SHAKE256) rather than complex mathematical problems like lattices or isogenies. Recent developments, such as the 'SPHINCS-' proposal by Ethereum researchers, aim to optimize this technology for blockchain use, potentially allowing quantum-resistant protection for wallets at a cost of just a few cents per transaction.

Who Are the Founders of SPHINCS?

The SPHINCS project was developed by a global team of renowned cryptographers. Key figures include Daniel J. Bernstein (University of Illinois at Chicago), Andreas Hülsing (Eindhoven University of Technology), and Tanja Lange. Other significant contributors include researchers from IBM Research, Google, AWS, and various academic institutions worldwide who collaborated to refine the SPHINCS+ submission for the NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography standardization process.

What Key Events Have There Been for SPHINCS?

The most significant milestone for the project occurred in August 2024, when NIST officially released the FIPS 205 standard, formalizing SPHINCS+ (as SLH-DSA) as a global post-quantum signature standard. In June 2026, Ethereum researchers introduced 'SPHINCS-,' a variant optimized for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) that uses native KECCAK256 hashing to provide affordable quantum security for on-chain wallets.

Project Announcements

Recent updates focus on the integration of SPHINCS+ into various software libraries and its potential deployment on the Ethereum mainnet via smart accounts. Researchers have successfully demonstrated a Solidity implementation of SPHINCS- capable of verifying signatures for approximately 127,000 to 150,000 gas.
